In China, under the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1126), the Empire’s advancement developed tremendously, both economically and intellectually. A powerful market economy was established. Although the Central Power favored the great stability in the country, it had, on the other hand, to struggle constantly against rampant corruption. The country was rich and the temptations of the men who ruled it were great. Those who held office in remote provinces - administrators, military, public servants, governors - all took advantage of their power to increase their own wealth, shamelessly exploiting their positions. To fight against this greed, Emperor REN ZONG gave full powers to a judge whose reputation extended to the outer boundaries of the Empire: Judge Bao (999-1062). This historical character, a mythical figure present in traditional oral tales, and later in books, is still an important individual for the Chinese people, even today. His authority was mandated by the highest ranks of the Empire. Even the Court and the Emperor’s close entourage feared him. He represented inflexible justice, which made him a very popular hero. Able to judge and condemn without any distinction between the lower classes and the highest circles of the State, his aversion for corruption and his wrath towards the oppressors of the poor were legendary. Here we find him on the road, furthering his crusade against corruption and all forms of injustice. He is accompanied by his loyal bodyguard ZHAN ZHAO, a knight with a great heart and an expert in martial arts; by his page BAO XING, a lively teenager who serves him and receives his teachings in exchange; and by GONGSUN his aide, a court clerk and a coroner. Two guards, WANG CHAO and MA HAN, insure the tribunal’s safety and lead a troop of about twenty soldiers, the most hardened in the Empire.
